Aboriginal medical student from Alice Springs wins prestigious Bursary

A dedicated Aboriginal medical student from Alice Springs has been awarded the MDA National and Rural Doctors Association of Australia (RDAA) Rural Health Bursary for 2019. Jean Pepperill is in her third year of Medicine at Flinders University’s Northern Territory Medical Program (NTMP) and has spent this year training at Alice Springs Hospital and the Central Australian Aboriginal Congress primary healthcare service.

Victorian doctor receives Peter Graham ʻCohunaʼ Award

Dr Peter Barker from Cohuna is the recipient of the Peter Graham ‘Cohuna’ Award 2019, for his dedicated service to that Victorian rural community over many years. The Peter Graham ‘Cohuna’ Award recognises rural doctors who have provided outstanding advocacy and medical service to their community.

Thursday Island doctor receives Rural Registrar of the Year Award

Dr Allison Hempenstall – a GP Registrar from Thursday Island, 1000 kilometres north of Cairns - has received the ACRRM-RDAA Rural Registrar of the Year Award 2019 for her dedication to healthcare provision in the Torres Straits and her commitment to public health. Dr Hempenstall provides primary and emergency care to the Torres Strait Islander community across remote islands in the Torres Straits.

SA student receives Medical Student of the Year Award

Kathryn Sharley – a fifth year medical student at the University of Adelaide – has received the Medical Student of the Year Award 2019 for her dedication to rural health and Indigenous health. She is the second person in her family to win the prestigious Award, with her sister, Laura, receiving the Award in 2014.
