Research roadmap for rural GPs
Dr Diann Eley, University of Queensland, Australia*
This presentation will discuss how rural GPs can become involved in research whether it entails transforming an idea or clinical problem into a feasible project that is rewarding and worthwhile, contributing to ongoing research and joining a research team or writing up existing data to contribute to the literature. The ‘research process’ in the context of a busy rural practice is outlined. The following practical suggestions and strategies will be discussed.
- Ideas transformed into feasible, relevant research questions – it’s in your head just let it out
- The research process – begin at the beginning and it will all make sense
- Ethical issues and considerations – not a hurdle but a friend
- Finding support - you need a team: who is out there to help
- The publication process – strategies for time management and negotiating the jungle of journal submission
The diversity of the ‘research roadmap’ for rural GPs will be illustrated through discussion of four projects that range from a randomised control trial in general practice to a small survey of doctors in one rural town.
- The feasibility, acceptability and cost-effectiveness of nurse-led models of chronic disease management in general practice
- How do rural GPs manage their inactive and overweight patients? A pilot study of rural GPs in Queensland
- Synergy and sustainability in rural procedural medicine: Views from the coalface
- Rural temperament and character: A new perspective on retention of rural doctors
These examples will illustrate various research designs feasible for general practice and highlight the barriers and enablers to undertaking research within a busy practice. Strategies to secure support and build a team of fellow GPs and academics will be offered to enable rural GPs to contribute to or lead a research project. Finally the publication process is explained and practical suggestions for publication are offered.
