ACRRM Independent Pathway registrars – who are they?
Dr Greg Gladman, Medical Educator, ACRRM, Australia *
There are currently three training pathways towards Fellowship of ACRRM. Both the Vocational Program Pathway and the Remote Vocational Training Scheme are subsidised by the Federal Government. The Independent Pathway is a non-subsidised, full fee-paying option. Typically it has suited experienced doctors who seek recognition of their experience and qualifications. Anecdotally, applicants have either been overseas-trained doctors who are filling workforce positions in rural general practice, or doctors working predominantly in rural and regional emergency departments. Seventy-one applications were
received for the pathway in 2010, with 64 successful applicants being offered a position on the Independent Pathway.
This presentation aims to outline the reasons behind a doctor’s decision to apply for the Independent Pathway rather than one of the subsidised options.
